Debi Mathias Wins
PACCA's 2004 Award of Excellence
At its annual conference, "Celebrating Diversity: Weaving a Tapestry for Pennsylvania's Children," September 28-29, 2004 in Harrisburg, PA, the Pennsylvania Child Care Association awarded Debi Mathias, Director of SUM Child Development, Inc. in Lewisburg, PA, the 2004 Award of Excellence. The award honors child care directors and administrators for outstanding service and accomplishments in the field of administration.
For over 20 years, Debi has shown leadership both in her child care center and in the early childhood community. In addition to her duties as a child care director, Debi has participated on numerous state-wide committees such as the PA Department of Public Welfare's Child Care Advisory Committee and the Keystone Stars Development and Advisory Committee. She is also a Validator for the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and has developed and conducted several trainings for child care professionals.
When asked what motivates her to stay in the child care field, Debi said, "What motivates me? The incredible importance and urgency of our work in the lives of each child we nurture, teach, hold, share a joyful moment with, get to really know, support through disappointment, play with and just be there for; inspiring excellence in staff who are undervalued, under-compensated and under-respected in our communities; and the small miracles evident every day in an early care center that reinforce hope, re-energize determination and commitment."
The Award of Excellence is presented to the owner, executive director, director or administrator who demonstrates the qualities of vision, teamwork, leadership, and education and training specific to early care and education. Individuals are nominated by colleagues and parents of children in their care. Winners are selected by a Nominating Committee comprised of PACCA members. Debi received her award at a special awards luncheon during the conference. She also received complimentary registration and hotel for the conference. The award was sponsored by Commerce Bank.
